アリストテレス - Aristotle

アリストテレス(Aristoteles)紀元前384年-322年。
古代ギリシアの哲学者・思想家。「ソクラテス」の弟子にあたる人物であり、「プラトン」や「ソクラテス」と並ぶ古代ギリシアの代表的な哲学者の一人。アレクサンドロス大王の家庭教師を務めたことでも知られている他、多岐にわたる自然研究の業績から「万学の祖」とも呼ばれている人物。
アリストテレスによる書き物は550巻ほどあったともされていますが、現存しているのは約3分の1程であり、その多くが講義用ノートや自分用の研究ノートに書かれたものであったいわれています。現在、一般的に流通している「アリストテレス全集」はこれらのノートを紀元前30年頃に整理編集されたものであるため、アリストテレスが意図したものと異なっている可能性が高いとも言われています。
アリストテレスは、人間の本性が「知を愛する」ことにあると考えており、ギリシア語でフィロソフィア(Philosophia)と呼び、フィロは「愛する」、ソフィアは「知」を意味する。この言葉がヨーロッパ各国の言語で「哲学」を意味する言葉の語源となっています。
